Verdun

The biggest battle in history, also known as “Verdun’s Hell”, began at dawn on February 21st, 1915, bombarding Verdun’s cathedral with a 380 Obus. The enemy advanced towards the forts of Vaux and Douaumont, where they annihilated four villages leaving soldiers to die under incessant bombardments and gas attacks. 400,000 soldiers from America, Canada, and France will have lost their lives in this tragic battle of Verdun. Verdun is one of the most important historical land sites to visit.

Somme battlefields

Around Arras and Albert took place some of the fiercest yet also most futile battles of World War I, where the grandiose square in Arras was destroyed to build more trenches. Fortunately the square has now been restored to its former glory which you can visit. At the nearby Vimy Ridge, the Canadians fell in their thousands; at Notre-dame de Lorette, the French suffered the same fate. Albert is not a place to stay overnight in, but makes a convenient base for exploring the many war cemeteries in the area during the day.
