Verdun

The battle of Verdun opened on the morning of February 21, 1916, with a german artillery barrage that lasted ten hours and expended 2 million shells. It concentrated on the forts of Vaux and Douaumont, which the French hard built after the 1870 Franco-Prussian war.

Somme battlefields

Around Arras and Albert, some of the fiercest and most futile battles of world war I took place, and at one time the trenches even art through the grandiose main square in Arras, now restored to its former glory. At nearby Vimy Ridge, the Canadians fell in their thousands; at Notre-dame de Lorette, the French suffered the same fake. Albert is not a place to luiger, but makes a convenient base for exploring the many war cemeteries in the area.
